I heard this story earlier this week. Long story short, a 17-year-old convicted of manslaughter received a 10-year deferred sentence, one of the conditions of which is that he must attend church every week.
We can debate whether or not Tyler Alred received a harsh enough sentence in this particular case, but my main question is: is it ever appropriate for church attendance to be a required court sentence? Would you protest this if it was given to you, or someone you knew?
In this particular case, the judge recognizes that his sentence would likely not pass a legal challenge, but since both sides agreed to it (and since Tyler Alred already attends church on a weekly basis), he doesn't think there will be a challenge.
